Buyer prompts
Prompt research: find the questions buyers ask AI assistants
Prompt research is the process of identifying the questions buyers type into AI assistants when they look for products or services like yours. It is the GEO equivalent of keyword research. Kraffic.ai discovers prompts from your website and market, lets you add your own or upload a CSV, and then tracks how ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Claude answer them.

What is prompt research?
Prompt research is finding and organizing the questions that real buyers put to AI assistants. A prompt is the text a person types into ChatGPT, Google Gemini or Claude, and it is usually longer and more specific than a search keyword.
The output is a tracked prompt list. That list defines what your AI visibility is measured on, so choosing it carefully matters more than its length.
How is prompt research different from keyword research?
Keyword research finds short phrases people search for; prompt research finds full questions and requests people ask in conversation. Keyword tools report search volume. There is no equivalent public source of prompt volume for AI assistants, so anyone quoting exact prompt volumes should explain where the figure comes from.
| Keyword research | Prompt research | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical input | "running shoes for flat feet" | "I have flat feet and run three times a week. Which shoe brands should I look at?" |
| Length | A few words | A sentence or more, often with context |
| Volume data | Available from search tools | Not published by the assistants |
| How it is validated | Search volume and ranking difficulty | Running the prompt and reading the answer |
What kinds of prompts should a brand track?
A brand should track prompts from each stage of a purchase decision, not only prompts that contain its name. Prompts without your brand name show whether assistants bring you up unprompted, which is where new customers come from.
- Category prompts: "best project management software for small teams"
- Problem prompts: a buyer describing a need in their own words
- Comparison prompts: one option against another
- Local or US-specific prompts: "in the USA", a state or a city
- Brand prompts: what assistants say when asked about you directly
Where do the prompts come from?
In Kraffic, prompts come from two places: discovery and you. The platform reads your website, records your business facts and discovers prompts buyers type for your category. You then add prompts you already know matter, for example from sales calls or support questions, by typing them in or uploading a CSV.
How do you know the prompt list is right?
A prompt list is right when it reflects how your buyers actually ask and when it covers your main products and competitors. The practical test is to run it: prompts that return answers about your category, naming you or your approved competitors, are relevant. Prompts that return unrelated answers can be removed.

FAQ
Questions about Prompt Research
What is a prompt in AI search?
A prompt is the question or request a person types into an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini or Claude. Unlike a search keyword, a prompt is often a full sentence that includes context, for example a budget, a location or a problem to solve. The assistant replies with a written answer rather than a list of links.
Can you see how many people use a specific prompt?
Not reliably. The companies behind ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Claude do not publish how often a given prompt is typed. Prompt research therefore focuses on relevance and coverage: prompts that match how your buyers ask, checked by running them and reading the answers. Kraffic.ai does not present invented prompt volumes.
Should tracked prompts include my brand name?
Most should not. Prompts without your brand name show whether assistants recommend you to someone who has not heard of you, which is the main goal of GEO. A smaller number of brand prompts is still useful, because they reveal how assistants describe you and whether the facts they state are correct.
Can I upload my own list of prompts?
Yes. In Kraffic.ai you can add prompts one at a time or upload a CSV file. Your prompts are tracked together with the ones the platform discovers and are run on Claude, ChatGPT and Google Gemini in the same way, so results are directly comparable across the whole list.
Does the wording of a prompt change the answer?
Yes. Small changes in wording, added context or a different location can lead an assistant to name different brands, and even the same prompt can produce different answers on separate runs. This is why it helps to track several phrasings of an important question and to judge results across scans instead of from one answer.
